why are we gold standard?
In 2013, The Banbury Therapy Centre embarked on a plan to develop a gold standard counselling academy, in Oxfordshire to serve the local community. Year by year we have developed and refined our curriculum to span the full 4 years of training. Our pioneer group of students who started with us at the beginning, graduated in June 2017 as fully qualified counsellors, and in 2018 our second group of graduates went out into the world to heal and to support. They are now working in a variety of contexts and some have joined the Banbury Therapy Centre to serve our local community with much needed mental health services. We are enormously proud of their achievements, and also grateful to them for showing us the way and helping us to develop what is a truly exciting, relevant and robust training for therapeutic counsellors.
What makes us special?
Firstly we are committed to teaching in small groups. We do not run groups larger than 12 individuals. We are convinced this is essential to building trust within the group so that our students are able to honestly and openly develop their understanding. Other organisations maximise their profits by running groups of 20+ students, which we feel is detrimental to the safety of the training group. People in large groups will tend not to take risks or push beyond their comfort zones. Trainees who play safe will not gain the learning they need to hold clients in a robust way.
Secondly we have a tried and tested curriculum integrating three complementary and reinforcing modalities, Person Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis, which together provide our graduates with a humanistic practice which is fully adaptable to prospective client’s varying presentations and needs.
Thirdly our tutors are of the highest calibre. They are qualified and experienced counsellors and psychotherapists who have a wide range of specialisations which they bring to the training.
Fourthly we are supported and accredited by the CPCAB. This excellent awarding body provides a successful model of criteria that our courses are contained within. The CPCAB has provided counselling qualifications for 20 years and helped to change countless lives for the better.
It is our intention to continue to develop and nurture the next generations of counsellors and psychotherapists as our organisation goes from strength to strength.
We are committed to the principle of inclusivity and encourage people from our entire community to enrol on our courses. For this reason we offer short term payment plans and some longer term payment plans for people who have limited financial resources. We also offer some bursary places on level 2. These places represent a considerably reduced fee. If you are on a low income please indicate your interest in financial assistance on your course application form and attach evidence of your income and any benefits you receive. Please note that any financial assistance is kept in strict confidence.

In April 2015 we opened our specially designed training venue near Banbury Cross. As our counselling courses gain in popularity, we need to accommodate an increasing number of students. Our refurbished premises at 18a South Bar provide a space which encourages creativity and a mutually supportive environment Our Academy is ideal for this very specific type of training and in stark contrast to traditional college classrooms which are not designed to give the privacy or comfort that create the conditions necessary for a therapeutic connection.
