family therapy

Families may attend therapy for many different reasons. The family unit is the first experience we have of relating, and as such family dynamics often have a pivotal role in issues for the individual, but can also affect the family as a collective.

While one-to-one therapy can be incredibly useful in working through family dynamics and patterns of behaviours, it may not be sufficient in some cases to focus solely on the individual family member. It can sometimes be useful to see the individual’s behaviours in the context of the family dynamic, and how this may be serving as a function in balancing or unbalancing relationships within the family unit.

Family therapy may not necessarily be limited to the whole unit attending sessions (although this is usual), but for example specific family members may wish to attend, such as a mother and daughter who may wish to work through a conflict, or historical event/issue.
