On Counselling and Being- Banbury Therapy Group

Shakespeare says: "to be or not to be". He does not say that in "being" you have to fight so many demons. In "being", you stand there alone and strip off your cultural beliefs, religious beliefs, family beliefs, your understanding of how the world works and who you thought you are or were "told" you are. You have a good hard look at it all and assess it all.

Somewhere between all of that, who you are is there waiting to be discovered and excited of the prospect of you "being". You have the choice of "being" no matter how uncomfortable that is or to bow to the superiority of your culture and other forces that are tying you down. You have the choice of greatness and being a shining star to lead your way and others or dimming your light and joining the crowds in fear; fear of change, fear of "being", and fear of taking responsibility for your own choices and decisions. With awareness of my own mortality, I choose "being". What do you choose?

Studying counselling is learning the skills and the different theories and techniques of counselling to best help clients make sense of their world and feel more rooted and embedded in it. But above all, it is an emotional toll and a process of searching. It is an emotional Ironman Triathlon of deep pain, overwhelming emotions, lightbulb moments, courage, resilience, and learning to be comfortable in your own skin and who you are. It is believing that change comes from within.

You will find so many articles on how to become a counsellor; what degrees you need, how much it might cost and how many years you need to dedicate to be a qualified counsellor. However, there is very little on how much emotional and personal work you need to do on yourself to understand your process, your patterns of relating, your triggers and work so hard to make sure that when you are ready to be in front of your client, you will be fully present with them.

All of us at Banbury Therapy Group are tremendously proud to see our student graduates embark on their journey as counsellors making a real difference. We are humbled by their hard work, bravery and their diversity; their backgrounds, personalities, different ways of working, passion, and drive. We celebrate this academic achievement and personal triumph that is very well earnt. We have faith in our students and that they will continue to work ethically keeping the best interest of the client in mind.

We provide a robust training and support for all our students in every way possible to face those difficult emotions safely and come on the other side stronger, more self-aware, and more skilled. During the pandemic, our staff and team of tutors worked tirelessly to adjust to the “new normal” of moving everything online and they took it in their stride.
